The District Cultural Arts Festival: Experience and Communications Design

behind The District Cultural Arts Festival

Presented by Six Square, the District Cultural Arts Fest is an exciting celebration that honors the rich legacy and cultural contributions of Central Texas’ Black community. Austin’s African-American and Black community is dwindling in size and its cultural makeup and background is changing. Six Square and its programs exist to expose Austin to Black arts and culture—to remind ourselves that it’s here, it’s thriving and it’s celebrated Black culture is important.
In 2018, the festival aims to establish itself as an arts leader, curate and present a festival that appeals to an intergenerational, multi-background audience and continue to create a nexus of Black cultural arts in Austin. The festival’s success will be measured by audience participation, attendance and consistency in messaging.

about the project

Entering its second year of production, The District Cultural Arts Fest is in a crucial period of growth. The team at Six Square had a few goals for 2018's manifestation of DCAF: establish the one-day event as a pinnacle of arts leadership, curate and present a festival that appeals to an intergenerational, multi-background audience and continue to create a nexus of Black cultural arts in Austin.

the resulting group work

After conducting interviews with members of Six Square's team to audit the festival's 2017 production, as well as assessing the festival's positioning within both the Austin and national markets, group work delivered a communications and experience plan for the festival (across social media, website, blog, email and internal administrative communication). These plans centered around Six Square's community-oriented, historically relevant and future-forward ethos, tangibly resulting in a series of press releases and reusable templates/graphics for The District Cultural Arts Fest, comprehensive production plans a distinct brand and messaging strategy, as well as team training around the festival's direction and goals.
